Frankston newspapers digitised

Old Frankston papers on Trove

Thanks to the National Library of Australia, the Frankston and Somerville Standard newspaper between 1921 and 1939 is now available online (plus Frankston's The Standard between 1939-1949 and the Frankston Standard from 1949).

These are fully searchable, full-text, full-page scans. So, now reasearchers and the casually idle can catch up the local news, sporting scores, advertisements, photographs, council carry-ons and gossip of yesteryear online.

You can also get the Mornington Standard between 1889-1908 and 1911-1920. Go to Trove for a full list of newspapers digitised so far.
The other Bruce Manor, the home of Australian Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce
as published in the Frankston & Somerville Standard, 11 February 1927 via Trove.

#NYR2012 What do we read?

The Library team's reading list

We asked Library team members to list their ten favourite books. We compiled the results and created a poster to share. The bigger the font, the more frequently that title appeared in our lists; hence the big Harry Potter reference.

You know, we probably read much the same as most of our customers.

Got a story to share?

Seeking living Frankston history

Bev Wilkinson of Golden Days Images is looking for residents within the Frankston area who would like to share their photographs and stories for an exhibition in August at B'Artiste.

Bev is seeking old images of the Frankston area and of those who lived here. She is also recording oral histories with residents who want to share their stories on life growing up in Frankston for a documentary. All participants will receive a free CD of their images.

If you are interested in taking part in this project, please contact Bev.

Here's an example of an interview by Bev, with Dorothy Dempster.

Goodbye and hello

Toy Library gone
YRC coming

The Frankston Toy Library has been Frankston Library's good neighbour since 1995. However, the Toy Library recently opened it's new digs at 20 Ebdale Street, Frankston, leaving the site across the forecourt empty.

Soon, though, we will be welcoming a new neighbour. The ship will go and the area will be re-developed to house the Youth Resource Centre.

Dickens' Women

Best read aloud

Best known to contemporary film-goers as Professor Sprout, Miriam Margolyes has a long and distinguished CV and she's coming to Frankston for a performance of Dickens' Women. It's a one-woman show where she brings to life 23 of Charles Dickens' most colourful female (and male) characters.

According to Miriam, Charles Dickens is best read out load. She explains her logic in this ABC Big Ideas podcast.

If you want to read some Dickens (preferably out load), then you can get some here.
