Round 5 round up

GFF

The Pies are flying, the Suns bagged their first win and all is well with footy. I can't wait until we meet the Cats in round 8.

While a Collingwood victory was predictable, it looks like hardly anyone picked the Gold Coast to win in the Blogalogue tipping competition. The best anyone did was 6 out 7, and several people got that. Meanwhile, the competition at the top of the ladder is hotting up, with muddy60 leading librarytart and MandyH on 31 wins each.

Round 4 round up

I say good bye

Sorry about the late footy post this week, but my team had a bye last weekend and I just got home from the nightclubs. With a zip-3 win-loss ratio, a bye's no bad thing.

I hear that it was an odd round. Only 7 games, but typical for this year, a draw.

No one from the Blogalogue tipping comp took home the burger, but 19 were 1 off with a round score of 6. I think most of them picked the Crows over Port. Meanwhile, in the tussle for top spot, MandyH re-gained the lead from google.

See ya later alligator,

Is your energy use costing the Earth?

Borrow a Power-Mate

Power-Mate with manual
and instructions
Power-Mate measures the energy use of each device in your home and tells you how much it is costing you (and the Earth) to run.

A Power-Mate can show you how much energy your appliances are using whilst in operation and on standby. Leaving your TV, computers and stereos on standy can cost households up to $180 a year.

Power-Mates (including instructions) are now available for a two week loan. You can reserve a Power-Mate kit or ask at the desk.

For more information on sustainable living, see the Council's environment page.

Tired of the same view?

See the Blogalogue another way

You can now see the Blogalogue in new ways. Thanks to the folks at Blogger, you can select between Sidebar, Mosaic, Flipcard, Timeslide and Snapshot views. As they can get a little confusing, we'll still be presenting your favourite library blog in the time honoured, old fashioned way too.

Round 3 round-up

We were ordinary

What's happened to my team? Round 3 and already I'm looking towards this week's bye with fondness.  You can talk about spending petrol tickets, going to the well so many times and having late starts to the pre-season as much as you like, but put simply the Sainters have lost their mojo.

We'll be lucky to force the Suns to a nil-all draw.

Not so unlucky are some of our footy tipsters. ab88 and my good friend agent zero both picked the Bombers and 7 other winners over the weekend. Well done also to google, who's just squeaked past MandyH to take the overall lead on percentage.

No printing at Carrum Downs until Monday

Unfortunately, our printing service at the Carrum Downs Library is unavailable until Monday. Happily, photocopying is still working.

Fortunately, printing is still available at Frankston.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

Picture Olivers Hill

Our hill of contrasts

Olivers Hill is a Frankston landmark. With its views across Port Phillip Bay and towards the Dandenong Ranges, it's long been a popular tourist attraction. It's also been a one of the region's most dangerous roads, with the occasional car leaping off the cliffs and into the water below.

Olivers Hill has long formed a social divide, with the folks on the hill representing the area's wealthier residents.

Photographers have been unable to resist the Hill's charms. As you can see from our Picture Frankston collection of Olivers Hill images, it has a striking presence through a lens looking both from and at the rise.

A library that's out of this world

Books, CDs and DVDs on the ISS

Circling overhead in low-Earth orbit, the International Space Station (ISS) is a multi-national research facility. To pass the time when not conducting experiments or space-station maintenance and construction work, astronauts are allowed to take along books, CDs and DVDs.

Our colleagues at LibraryThing put in a Freedom of Information request to find out what the astronauts are reading, watching and listening to. Along with classics like War and Peace and A Charlie Brown Christmas, there's lots of science fiction (Asimov's Foundation series, Star Wars movies, Stargate SG-1 etc) and the music includes the Frank Sinatra song Fly Me to the Moon. Apollo 13 is there, but not 2001: A Space Odyssey.

You can see a list from 2008 on PDF. . . If you were going to spend a few months in space, what would take to read, listen or watch? . .

Draw

What a game! I really liked the second quarter. But it's hard to beat the draw specialists from Seaford. Is it just me, or do the Saints try harder not to loose than they try to win? Anyway, it's good to be on the board, even if it's only by half a win.

On the Blogalogue ladder, 5 tipsters picked 7 winners (well, probably 6 winners and, by default, 1 draw) and last week's perfect picker has been replaced on top of the ladder by MandyH, who has a total score of 14.

Tiger Teddy

PS: I can't wait until we play the Suns in round 17.
