Social media mining

We're all at it
Radio National's Background Briefing recently had an interesting program on social media. It was about issues like privacy on Facebook and sentiment mining, where what you write online becomes valuable data for organisations.
.
Along the way, they mentioned foursquare, a smart phone geolocation app that works as a social media tool. foursqare is also a game, allowing you to become the "mayor" of a location by being its most frequent visitor. Currently, Frankston Library's foursaquare mayor is Karl.G.
.
The Carrum Downs Library is yet to have a mayor. Now, there's a challenge.

Round 13 round up

At last, we beat the Cats!
By our chuffed correspondent, Nicky

Now we just have to win a Premiership.

Like the Blogalogue comp's Otis B Driftwood, we're beating all-comers. This week, Otis extended his grip at the top of the ladder with a 7 win haul. Now he's 3 clear of his nearest opponent, bluesgal, with daylight (actually, harps) 3rd.

Go Sianters!
Nicky

PS: My hammy's fealing much better.

Julia Gillard, PM

Western Bulldogs' full forward
flies to Mars with Brad Pitt
Her Wikipedia entry has already been updated, but if you want a more in-depth brief on Australia's first woman Prime Minister, you could do worse than read The Making of Julia Gillard by Jacqueline Kent.

Our PCs etc aren't working

Public network down
The public computers, for web access and printing etc, are not working at the Frankston and Carrum Downs libraries. Neither are the photocopiers, nor the catalogue computers. You can't even book a PC for a future date.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

We'll let you know via the blog when things are working again.

Peter Temple wins Miles Franklin

Crime pays
Crime writer Peter Temple has won the 2010 Miles Franklin Literary Award, celebrating the best in Australian literature. This adds to his glittering list of awards accepted in recent years.

Temple was suitably gobsmacked, observing that the judges will "take the flack for giving the Miles Franklin to a crime writer...".

Of course, we have the winning book: Truth.

Round 13 and half and a bit more round up

WTB?
With our befuddled correspondent, Herbie

What’s up with Brisbane? Thanks to our even more northerly friends, the Tigers are on a roll, with a winning streak of 2! The Lions are a one man team, and he’s not the Carlton reject.

And my team hasn’t even played! And the Blogalogue doesn't have a ladder this week! I don’t get it. What the bear’s going on?

I am and always will be,
Herbie

It annoys other customers.

Footy tipping round 12

Winning by increments
By our hopeful correspondent, Dees Bear

The last time we played the Pies, we lost by a point. At the weekend, we drew. So, next time I'm planning on a one point victory to Melbourne.

Fortunately, draws are counted as a win for all in the Blogalogue competition, so while neither the Dees nor the Maggies won, all our tipsters got it right. Last year's winner, Wendy, is back in the hunt with a round topping 7 win haul, while our dominant player, bluesgal, has finally been tipped from first place by Otis B Driftwood. Thing is, I hear he's a Collingwood supporter.

Ra, ra! Go Dees!
Cheerio,
Dees Bear

Footy tipping round 11 round up

Half way there

We're half way through both the AFL home and away season and the Blogalogue footy tipping competition.

bluesgal, a librarian from Eastern Regional Libraries, has dominated the ladder’s top spot this year, but Frankston Library customer Otis B. Driftwood is hot on her low heels with an equal number of wins. They’re both on 63, just a little behind last year’s round 11 ladder topping 65. Customer muddy 60, Casey-Cardinia librarian tango 2 and customer Mollyfud aren’t far behind and round out the top 5.

2009’s top 3 tipsters, Wendy and runners up Scott and Refgurl, haven’t really been in the hunt in 2010. But, with a full half season to go, I suggest to those of us who are a bit off the pace that it’s not over yet. Take some heart from all those last quarter come-from-behind goal sprees happening lately.

Seasonal poll update

Autumn and winter 2010
Autumn's poll was about your response to the Library's self-serve loans. I'm not going to comment, other to say that these polls are not scientific.

The new poll is about living in Frankston in winter. It's on the right, in the lower sidebar.

Like something from the Jetsons

Self-serve evolution

Frankston Library has taken another giant leap into the world of self-service.

New stand alone self-serve issues machines are now available for you to use.

You can now also pick up your own reservations, from the shelves located between the Non-Fiction and Reference collections. Reservations are filed by your last name.

Inter Library Loans are still located behind the desk.

And before anyone asks, we're thinking of calling them Rosie.
