Game on

It’s huge!
The Blogalogue’s footy tipping competition has grown to 28 tipsters, with a good mix of library workers and community members. Unfortunately, that’s way too big to post the ladder on the blog (or at least until I figure out a faster way of doing it).

Suffice to say that Mollyfud aced round 1 with a perfect score and was keenly followed by 7 with 7 wins each. Well done, he says with envy: 6 normally wouldn't be too bad.

Carrum Downs Non-fiction to move...

To make the non-fiction collection at Carrum Downs Library easier to browse, we will be moving the collection into categories – like a bookstore. So you’ll be able to come in and browse through all the books about renovating and decorating your home and looking after your garden in one easy to use “House and Garden” section. Or look for children’s project books in “Science” or “Animals”. For a full list of the categories, please take a look at the brochure.

The move will take place on Thursday 8th April and once completed, we’d love to hear what you think about it! Fill in a feedback form to share your thoughts.

I see dead people's books

Legacy libraries
You can tell a lot about a person’s private life by the books they read.

Ian Fleming’s library included Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (because he wrote it) and things like X-rays and electrons; an outline of recent X-ray theory. Katherine Hepburn’s books ranged from wildflowers and Pablo Picasso to biographies of Spencer Tracy. Alfred Deakin read poetry like The poetical works of Alexander Pope and political works like Colorphobia : an exposure of the "White Australia" fallacy. Marie Antoinette’s collection is extensive, but a bit of a loss unless you can read French.

These collections are brought together by our friends at LibraryThing. They run a group called I See Dead People’s Books that catalogues the libraries of famous people.

What does your bookshelf say about you?

Frankston Remixed

Re-hash some old photos
If you’re aged between 15 and 25, you could win a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 for Windows in our Frankston Remixed competition.

At the Frankston Remixed Flickr group, you’ll find a selection of local historical images. You can then mix or mash them up with other images you have taken and email them to us by 18 April, 2010. We ask that emails have the subject heading Frankston Remixed and that you share your creations on the Frankston Remixed Flickr group pool.

We’ll make posters from the best three and use them in library promotions. Winner announced Thursday, 22 April.
.
You could probably do something like this, only better.

AFL rounds
Are you passionate or knowledgeable about Aussie Rules? Or are you just hung up on the thrill of guessing? If so, then the Blogalogue's AFL footy tipping competition is here for the ride.

We don’t have big money to throw at you, but the winner does receive a $50 Rebel Sport gift voucher and the second prize is a double movie pass.

It’s free to sign up and all it takes is a little thought and a bit of guesswork. This comp is even open to Frankston City Council employees.

January customer feeback

Oh my
I don't know whose revolution this is: ours for being all 21st century and installing a self-serve loans system or if it's a customer revolt!

Either way, the words are passionate and heartfelt in January's Frankston and Carrum Downs customer feedback. Some of it is even positive.

Counting the steps

Pedometers
for loan

In support of the 10,000 steps health promotion, you can now count your steps to health with the help of a pedometer borrowed from the library.

Pedometers are available for 4 week loans and we keep them at the desk at Frankston, so either ask for one there or reserve one on the catalogue.

Because walking is good for you.

Diagram Prize voting time

A feast or famine of odd book titles?
Bookseller's Diagram Prize for the oddest book title of the year is usually a lol moment, and maybe it's just me but this year's short-list (although coming from the longest long-list yet) seems a little ho-hum. Yes, there's What Kind of Bean is This Chihuahua?, but after that they do seem a bit kind of flat, although Collectible Spoons of the Third Reich does sound intriguing.

Anyway, voting is on the left side, way done on the theBookseller home page.

If this year's selection leaves you a bit disappointed, then please take a look at a list of previous winners to tickle your funny bone.

Frankston City in summer is...

The beach!
The Library's air-conditioning came second.
Thanks to all who participated.

The autumn poll is now up. So, what do you think about the Library's new self-serve loans?
