Librarians courting controversy

Librarians rarely favour censorship

ALIA (the Australian Library and Information Association, the professional body of librarians) has joined forces with Google,
Inspire Foundation and Yahoo! to take on the Federal Government's proposed Internet filtering regime.

They have just issued a joint statement saying that they think the Government proposal is misguided and proposing alternatives which they say would be more effective whilst also protecting our rights of access.

It's an emotive issue, given the material that the Government is trying to deny access to, but the questions are about if it will be effective and if it will be targeted.

Do you have: Library loans you haven’t returned or unpaid fines and charges?

Each year, a significant number of library items are not returned and fines build up for members who don’t return items on time. When library items are not returned, it means they are no longer available to the community to borrow.

We’d like to change this.

From 1 March 2010, accounts with fines over $25 will be sent to an external materials recovery agency and an additional fee of $15 will be added to the account.

We understand that people today are very busy and can often overlook many things, including returning books to the library and paying fines. So if you’ve been meaning to return those items or pay those fines, get in early to avoid any additional fees. You can talk to us about an easy payment plan if necessary and once cleared, you'll be able to access our 200,000+ items again!

New storytime venue

Now at Karingal Place
Karingal Place is Frankston City's new family and children's hub, so it makes perfect sense that it's also our newest storytime venue. Each Wednesday from 9.30 AM (but not during school holidays) Kerry and Margaret will present half an hour of fun and games for the 2 to 5 year olds. At the same time, parents have a chance to enjoy, bond and share.

For more details of this and other storytimes, please see our website's events page.

December 2009 customer feedback

And then came self-serve...
It seems so long ago, a dream, a nightmare for some, like so last year year and so next gen, but as this bumper edition of customer feedback attests, we introduced modern self-service technology to the libraries in December and I think some of our customer noticed. It'll be interesting to watch this space over the next few months to see how things fair, now that we've all calmed down a bit, learnt a few things and all is working smoother.

So, here for your reading pleasure, is the December 2009 feedback for Frankston and Carrum Downs. You may now curse, froth, nod, smile and shake a head or fist or two in private.

Summer Reading Club winners

Big readers win!
Sisters Nicola and Vanessa Bradbury (photographed) took to the Summer Reading Club with a competitive gusto: Vanessa read 120 books (!) and Nicola read 50. Courtney Trembearth also read 50 books and George Yau won the Lucky Dip Prize.

A total of 120 children took part in the program which ran from early December to 18th January with the aim of keeping kids reading over the summer holdiays. Well done to all.

Storytimes return!

All sorts of fun for kiddies
Our 2010 season of storytime for tiny tots and 2-5 year olds starts next week at the Frankston and Carrum Downs libraries.

For the bubs and their parents, there's a read-a-loud story, music and advice on what to look for in a book for the littlies.

At the pre-schoolers events, each storytime also features a simple and fun craft activity to take home.
.
Storytimes are also a great way for parents to mix and share.
.
For details, see our events page.
