The comfort of print and paper

Are books better in bed?
According to the reportage of a survey commissioned by the Swedish furniture retailer Ikea (no jokes there), Australians are more likely to prefer cuddling up with a good read than with someone else.

Of course, they do sell bookcases.

Login rejection

Alternatives abound!
We are experiencing login rejection via one of the numerous places that you can login to the catalogue; the the login entry point on the top right of the catalogue's homepage isn't working.

As an alternatives, you can still login via:
  • the login box at the bottom of the catalogue's homepage (useful if you're using the catalogue in the library) - see below
  • the top right login point on the search results screen in the catalogue
  • and the login spot on the homepage of the new website (in fact, we'd prefer if you bookmarked this and used it as your main online access point to the library, because you can do it all from there)

We are working on a solution and apologise to those inconvenienced and thank all who have alerted us to the issue.

Hello Readers,
Isn’t reading just divine? There’s little I like more on a long summer’s day than lying in the shade of a tree, a cool drink in one hand and a hot romance in the other, dreaming of exotic things and far away places. That’s why I’m so excited to be a part of the 2010 Summer Read program. What better way to share my joy and excitement for books than visiting libraries around Victoria. Libraries, those treasure troves of stories unread, adventures yet to be taken, romances soon to the heart racing.

This year there are 10 wonderful books that will have that special something for everyone. How do I know? , you may ask. I am an Expert Global Reading Consultant. With my uncanny ability to know you better than you know yourself, and together, with my Famous Reading Machine, after much consultation, laughter and discussion together, I will magically find a book that is just right for you.

The Summer Read it is all about you dear Readers. It is about what you love; reading just for pleasure, the fun we will have finding new books together, and sharing your own stories about reading and books you love and hold dear. Two wonderful books, currently on my bedside table, that have my full attention are ‘Women’s Waterworks: Curing Incontinence’ and, ‘My Outback Protector’ by Margaret Way, a Large Print classic. I can’t wait to hear about what moves you.

As if all this isn’t enough by itself (and really what more could you want?), there will be fantastic prizes for the readers, give–aways and everywhere I go you can be sure of scrumptious food and refreshments. I refuse to consult at a poorly catered event.

So please join me and each other at the Frankston Library on Saturday 30th January at 1.30pm to share, in a light-hearted way, the humor, pathos and joy of books.

Until then, happy reading!

In memoriam

It is with great regret that today we announce the passing of one of our own, Russell.
Russell was a gentle giant. He worked at both the Frankston and Carrum Downs libraries and was greatly loved by all. We’ll miss his funny bone, his grin… everything, and we know that many of our customers were touched by his down to earth manner too.

If we seem a little down, have a tear in an eye, please be understanding; we’ve just lost one of the good guys.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to Russell's family and friends.

New Library website

Stop Blog!
The new website is now,
so check it out...

The wait is almost over
We've been scheming for over a year, consulting with customers and planning what we think is the best library website around.

Tomorrow, all going well, the Library's new website will go live. Its features include:
  • catalogue searching from each page
  • login to your details from each page
  • today's opening hours on the homepage
  • improved What's on events access
  • and Meebo Ask-A-Librarian instant chat on the homepage

The change over may cause some temporary disruption in the morning to website access, but we reckon that you'll love the new site.

Playaways

The next generation in talking books!

We’re introducing this new format to our talking book collection at Frankston Library. Playaways ha
ve an entire book in one small device, no more discs, no more remembering (or forgetting!) which track you’re up to - Playaways remember for you!

We are trialling a small range of fiction, non-fiction and children's titles and we’d love to hear what you think about them. They can be easily found on our catalouge, just enter "playaway" in the quicksearch box or click here for a complete list of titles.

Use them in the car, while walking on the beach, anywhere you like! You'll need to provide your own triple A batteries (rechargable ones are best) and headphones (alot of people have their own already). If you want to play them through your car or home stereo you'll need to have your own adapters which are pretty cheap to buy.

Please tell our staff or fill in a feedback form to share your thoughts on Playaways so we know whether to buy more of them!
