When writers bag

Who does Nabokov think he is?

Michelle Kerns of the Examiner has collected 50 of the best author vs. author put downs and it makes for wonderful reading.
.
When you get people who can really write slagging off other literary greats, they do so with savage venom and wit. There are no sacred cows here: Mark Twain's dismissal of Jane Austen is severe, but Twain in turn cops a serving from William Faulkner.

The comments, such as that quoted above from Caro, are also worth a look.
