ALIA (the Australian Library and Information Association, the professional body of librarians) has joined forces with Google,
Inspire Foundation and Yahoo! to take on the Federal Government's proposed Internet filtering regime.
They have just issued a joint statement saying that they think the Government proposal is misguided and proposing alternatives which they say would be more effective whilst also protecting our rights of access.
It's an emotive issue, given the material that the Government is trying to deny access to, but the questions are about if it will be effective and if it will be targeted.

Sadly the Great Australian Firewall is broken before it has even been erected. The only impact it will have is to inconvenience the less knowledgable users. Even the official testing results admit that any competent user can bypass the filters.
ReplyDeleteOf course, if Conroy were really interested in targeting child abuse online, he might have pushed to allocate the $44.5 million spent on his firewall to the AFP for use in tracking and arresting online predators, rather than taking a third of their budget and spending it on his pet project.

ReplyDeleteThankyou for your comment on the GAF.
Let me just also remind contributors that "Conroy" is actually Senator Steven Conroy to you.

If that's a comment on spelling, it's worth remembering that I had about four hours of sleep due to a really addictive computer game and a cat who likes mornings.
ReplyDelete:p
Scott.
No, not spelling, just polite and correct by Debrett's nomenclature.

I fully concur with you Harps, this will let the cat out of the bag, I can see definition of harmful content being extended to other areas at the whim of the Govt. The strength of the internet filter will increase gradually in the future if people let the Federal Govt get away with this. I worry this will be only the beginning of a Govt that decides it knows what people can and cannot read, I wonder if Mark Conroy has read the book 1984 by George Orwell.
ReplyDeletePS when does the footy tipping comp start,it was great last year.

Blograrion,
ReplyDeletethat type of behaviour in blogs makes you look petty and like someone who should be ignored. We know who Scott is referring to.
thanks,
dave.
Hi dave, I'm sure you know who Conroy is too.
ReplyDeleteAs The King used to say: It's a joke, Joyce.
Otis, how goes thee?
ReplyDeleteI understand your concern about the possible mission creep of filtering, but on the proviso that whatever I say here may not be to opinion of the Frankston City Council.
Anyway, the footy tipping will launch again this year. We're just trying to organise a slightly bigger prize.
Note to self: I must start publishing these comments in order.
