More ways to find out what's new

New stuff at your fingertips
You now have more ways of seeing what's new at the Library.

Our What's New for Loan page now features RSS feeds for each listed collection, so if you use an RSS reader (and there's probably one in your web browser) you can be alerted daily when we add something to the catalogue.

As these feeds are also accessible via the Library's Twitter stream, if you're into Twitter then you might like to follow us there too. Our Twitter is also now on the Library's own browser toolbar for your home PC or laptop.

For the geeky, we've set up Read Alert profiles in the catalogue to send emails to Blogger blogs, then burnt the RSS feeds with Feedburner and have our Twitter fed via twitterfeed. Simple.

What's the new desk at Frankston?

Is it a...
  • New help desk?
  • Space for more computers?
  • An RFID self issues point?
  • A tomato vending stall?
  • Or none of the above?

Only time will tell. Around November.

Any suggestions?

Ageing Positively Survey

Help Frankston be more age-friendly
The Council wants Frankston City to be an age-friendly city and do to this needs the opinions of those of us who are over 50.

Hence, the Council is running the Ageing Positively Survey. You can fill out the survey online or in print and we have copies at both the Frankston and Carrum Downs libraries. It's short and in reasonably large print.

There was a game on Saturday

As some of us at Blogalogue Central were feigning disinterest over the weekend, we decided to ask a couple of interested parties who won the big one. So...

Refgurl looks happy.
Think there's a Go Cats theme there.

.

.
This Dementor-like presence (seen sporting a a red, white and black scarf for the last 6 months) just tried to suck the joy from others whenever approached.
.

I think we got our answer.

Copying and printing upgrade

Public PCs and copiers
briefly out of action

On Tuesday 22 September, we will be changing over our print system. The public computers and photocopiers at Frankston and Carrum Downs will be unavailable during the change over.

The new system will be more convenient, enabling access to print jobs from a touch screen/card swipe unit located at each copier.

You'll still be able to access PCs and copying from the council shops at Langwarrin and Seaford.

Once opened, you can either browse the results or use the Refine Set option to look for something specific. When you find what you're looking for, you can print, email or save the image.

Wanted: some old papers

Help digitise the nation's newspapers
Australia is in the middle of a huge newspaper digitisation project, making our historical papers available online.

The thing is, some of our papers are missing. With this in mind, the National Library of Australia has published a wanted list, which includes one of our local journals of record, the South Bourke and Mornington Journal, for the years 1921-1922.

If know where you can get your hands on any of the missing newspapers, please contact the project's coordinators.

yourtutor award

Thankyou to all those who helped
Tutoring Australasia, the company that brings you the yourtutor tutoring chat service, has presented the Library with an award! Thanks to the support of students, parents, teachers and the Library team, we've earned a place in the National Top15 of e-learning innovators among yourtutor subscribers.

yourtutor provides one-on-one online tutoring to Library members from grade 4 to year 12, between 4-8pm, Monday to Friday throughout the school year. To take a peek at how it works, have a look at our YouTube video.

Thanks to all who have used yourtutor and promoted it, as something like this is a community effort.

September live music at Frankston

Live at the Library Lounge
.
Brad Matton
13 September 2009
1:30pm - 3:00pm
Brad Matton plays music to relax - guitar being the first instrument he picked up as a child, imitating his mother’s style of folk, easy listening and rock. His performance includes original songs.
.
Chris Fatouros
27 September 2009
1:30pm - 3:00pm
Blessed with a rich soulful voice, multi-instrumental skills and the ability to seemingly mesmerise his audience, Chris Fatouros has built a reputation for being one of the finest acoustic performers in Melbourne. His "cruisy acoustic music" repertoire places emphasis on classic rock and folk, plus original songs - catch some on his MySpace page.

Frankston City Libraries supports local music.

Round 22 round up

And the winner is
Wendy!
The inaugural Blogalogue AFL footy tipping competition has been run
and won by the Library’s own Wendy Everard.
Wendy will be going to the movies on us soon.

16 players stayed the distance, riding the bumps, goals and draws of 22 big rounds of the AFL premiership season. Even at the last, as seasoned tipsters buckled under a round of upsets, bluesgal managed 8 whilst Wendy’s 6 shot her to victory in a last minute dash past an underperforming Scott.
Even wooden spoon winner Rav scraped together a 6!
The Blogalogue’s AFL tipping comp will be back in 2010
and we thank all who played.
