Australian Romance readers unite!

Romance reader survey
For those who love a good romance, the Australian Romance Readers Association (ARRA) has launched an online survey of romance reader habits so that they can get a broader understanding of the market in Australia.

Click here if you would like to join the ARRA. I attended their inaugural convention earlier in the year and they had some amazing authors present to sign their books such as Sherrilyn Kenyon and MaryJanice Davidson and Keri Arthur.

VicLitMap

Navigate your way through
Victoria's literary legacy
Our friends at the State Library of Victoria have established the Victoria Literary Map, an online tour of the state's most important authors. By visiting the map, you can learn about Victoria's writers and their origins, or visit the places where some of our greatest writing was created or set.
.

The Map is associated with The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria exhibition, which is now travelling to libraries across the state and which will park for a while at Frankston Library in November. More info on that closer to the time.

July 09 feedback

That's your opinion
In a secular, liberal, bourgeois democracy, everyone's entitled to an opinion on everything, including their public libraries. With this in mind, here's Frankston's highly opinionated customer feedback for July and that for Carrum Downs from June and July.

It's good to have an opinion.

Well, I would, if I had one. Seaford's too good for them. And that Riewoldt can go back to the Gold Coast - if they still want him!

You know, there was a time not so long ago when feral Sainters expected to loose.

Get more from your catalogue

Now with LibraryThing!
LibraryThing is an online social networking site for book lovers, enabling readers to write and share reviews, rate books, add tags and find similar works.

Now, the labours of LibraryThing's many thousands of global bookworms is available for all via the Library's catalogue. When you click on a book's title in the catalogue, you're likely to find LibraryThing content including star ratings and links to reader reviews. There's also similar titles and tag links that are discovery tools to take to you related books elsewhere in the catalogue.

There's even a Google Books link that takes you directly that book's content online, which means that if you want it in a hurry you can read it right there on your screen (although some titles have no, snippet or limited previews).
.
Of course, if you're not a member of LibraryThing, please remember that you can add your own reviews and star ratings to anything in the catalogue.

And the winner is... The Graveyard

2009 Hugos
Lovers of science fiction rejoice for the Hugo Awards have been announced!

Neil Gaiman won the Best Novel award for The Graveyard Book (see the review in the Guardian espousing his genius). It's full of wonderful characters and lives up to typical Gaiman inventiveness. I can highly recommend this for adult and teen readers alike. Gaiman is the author of the recently released film "Coraline" and the fabulous Sandman series as well as the laugh out loud joy of Good Omens (collaborating with the comic genius, Terry Pratchett). Reserve your copy today!

Who needs overdues?

Voluntary charge avoidance
Recently, there was a story in Britain's Daily Mail of a 91 year old who has borrowed "nearly 25,000 books" from her local public library and "has never once had to pay an overdue charge." What an inspiration!

Here's some steps that we can take to follow in the footsteps of this great role model:
  • Do things with your receipts: use as a bookmark, stick on the fridge, attach to a calender etc.
  • Set up an alert: set due dates in a calender application, join library Elf for email reminders or mark due dates on a wall calendar or in a diary.
  • Access your details remotely: login to your loan record online or call the library on 9784 1020 during opening hours and enquire about your due dates.
  • Be a regular library user with set visiting times and keep your loans together.

Returning loans on time isn't rocket science; it just takes a little thought and it makes your borrowing experience so much nicer (and cheaper).

Librarians again

The Librarians season 2
Our Middleton branch is returning to service after the fire, and a crew from ABC-TV is there to capture the behind the scenes progress to opening in a new building. Nada's been in control, Matthew is still writing and Frances is all in a tither. Can't wait to see the new Culture Pod unveiled.

But beware, the private live of a librarian is fraught with drama, rude words, lust and complex interpersonal relationships and is rated at least M.

The 1st episode aired last night at 9pm, which I think is the reason why Frankston Library was almost empty by 8.30. If you missed it, here's your chance to catch up.
