Scinema at Frankston Library

Travelling Festival of Science Film
Take off into realms of wonder with the Scinema science film festival. From the Big Bang in 4.5 minutes to Charles Darwin, neurotic aliens to biomedical research, we present a program of short science films over 3 big, free sessions at the Frankston Library.
.
When: Take a seat for a while or just drop in.
- Saturday, 15 August, 930am to 3.30pm
- Tuesday, 18 August, 6:30pm to 8.30pm
- Thursday, 20 August, 6:30pm to 8.30pm

Where: Frankston Library's Long Room

Cost: Free!

Here's the complete program:

Saturday, 15 August 9:30am to 3.30pm
The good heart attack 7 mins
The resurrection of dead dogs in Russia in the 1930s. An unstoppable heart in the US half a century later. And now in London, a hand-made heart attack. How a strange, paradoxical discovery is helping to save lives.

Darwin on the evolution trail 10 mins
Curious by nature, the young Charles Darwin embarks on a voyage around the world. At that time he was not to know that it was to be the beginning of a sensational scientific breakthrough.

Reading the book of life 30 mins
Tells the story of the race to sequence the human genome and what the sequence first revealed.

A lasting desire to last 52 mins
The story of a woman who takes a sometimes humorous approach to investigating the reasons behind the ageing process and the various possible ways of slowing it down.

Science fiction, science fact 6 mins
Whether it is Star Trek's USS Enterprise, or the iconic space station in 2001: A Space Odyssey, science fiction has always provided inspiration and ideas for the scientists and engineers that design and build real pace craft.

Blood, tears and sweat 5 mins
A series of short films inspired by biomedical research.

Why is science important? 29 mins
Science teacher Alom Shaha goes on a quest to answer the question 'Why is science important?'

Sound waves 5 mins
A series of short films inspired by biomedical research.

Naturally obsessed: the making of a scientist 60 mins
Mixing humour with heartbreak, Naturally obsessed tells a profoundly real yet intensely dramatic story about 3 irrepressible student scientists.

Dish communication 7 mins
At a remote radio dish, Professor Quintaine searches for signals from outer space while Rose the cleaner searches for signals from Professor Quintaine. A signal comes – but it’s from angry intergalactic neighbours. Will these two be able to save the world?

Alienation 5 mins
Aliens discover a previously inhabited planet we know as Mars. They decide its not worth colonising and will seek elsewhere. Earth beckons.

The little street called the Milky Way 3 mins
Fact file of each planet in the solar system.

Universal surprise 6 mins
A neurotic alien is preparing for a welcome party for the lunar Mars mission explorers.

The ingredients for life 31 mins
If man is to live in space and travel to other planets, we must learn how to survive for long periods of time out there: we have to recreate in space the vital ingredients for life on Earth.

The creation of the moon 2 mins
Two planets orbit the sun and then collide. One planet gets destroyed and bits come off the other planet and they join to form the moon.

Big bang 4.5 mins
The Big Bang, light o' energy, radiate, compound, evolve, compose and create stars, planets and Gaia (Earth).

Space Transportation: an ATV perspective 32 mins
ESA's Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) mission is used to explain concepts like orbital mechanics, propulsion and satellite navigation.

Tuesday, 18 August 6:30pm to 8.30pm
Planet Earth 5 mins
An introduction to the Earth.

O as origin 8mins
Piccolina, the little water molecule, recounts the exciting story of the formation of our planet Eearth and the emergence of life.

Big bang in Tunguska 45 mins
On 30 June 1908, the largest explosion recorded in human history reverberated round the planet. The force of the explosion, 2,000 times that of the Hiroshima bomb, destroyed in the Siberian woodland area the size of Luxemburg. What happened?

Two planets, one future 6 mins
In a small town in country Western Australia 4 young teens are studying and practicing techniques used to prepare for future space exploration.

What on earth is wrong with gravity 49 mins
Dr Brian Cox goes in search to understand the nature of gravity.

Thursday, 20 August 6:30pm to 8.30pm
Look! Up in the sky!5 mins
This film about the Woomera Test Facility in South Australia celebrates the dreams of the many scientists who launched Australia into the space race.

The moving Earth 52 mins
In 1453, the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus challenged the prevailing view of the world. He claimed that the Earth was not the immovable centre of the universe, but a planet in orbit around the sun. To the Christian church this was heresy that contradicted the holy word.

400 Years of the telescope 60 mins
Telescopes have expanded our vision and knowledge of our spectacular universe. Here's the story of how what we see beyond Earth challenges and changes the human perspective.

Round 17 round up

wendy's hit the ton
wendy's consistency at successful tipping has her the first to reach the notable 100 mark (something that some of us will not make this season at all). Meanwhile, something happened that saw Refgurl pick just 3 wins, elevating Scott's lucky coin tossing to 2nd place. As we draw near the end, the pack that forms the top 9 behind wendy is a volatile place to be.

Where are Frankston's CDs?

Ask
The music shelves at Frankston are currently looking depleted, but don't panic. No, we haven't suddenly let people borrow 50 CDs at once. It's all got to do with our change-over to RFID technology.

While we process the CDs into new RFID cases, they will temporarily go into what's called on the catalogue "Stock maintenance." As they're still for loan, please ask us at the desk to summon them from our back room for you to borrow.

Round 16 round up

"Curse those damnable Hawks!"*
The top 8 tipped accordingly, with seven 7s and one 8 (well done customer Mollyfud). The difference between a 7 and an 8 in each case was the Pies' loss to the Hawks. Yep, we're back on the Hawks bandwagon; although, they do play the Cats this weekend. Will it be another 2008 Premiership-like boil over? My nails are shortening.

We're in the news!

Front page and online
The Frankston Independent's coverage of last week's official launch of the refurbished Frankston Library has a nice photo of the Minister and the boss, plus some basic info on the improvements made.

Note that we normally call the "new sound-deadening plastic phone booths" space chairs.

Round 15 round up

Fractals
The role of chaos theory in sporting competitions is little known. Take some recent disorderly results from the AFL for example. The Dees ("Ra! Ra!" says Sir Lord Harper) have won 2 in a row, which is more than the number of goals that Freeo could score in 4 quarters last weekend. The Saints have won 15 consecutive matches, but the Cats have lost 2 in successive weeks. It's worse than trying to beat the call on the toss of a coin, an analogy which was statistically matched by our top 2 competition leaders who merely broke even while muddy60 and bluesgal nearly took the cake with 7 each. Even librarytart, who's name has never been mentioned in the same breath as any football code until this year, is beating the odds into 5th place. Chaos, you see! Sheer oval pandemonium.

Blogalogue access crisis!

To quote Blogger:

"Some users are seeing an 'Operation Aborted' error message when trying to load their blogs from Internet Explorer. We're looking into this and will update this message when we have a fix. We apologize for the inconvenience."

The difficulty seems to appear when attempting to access an individual post, like one that is directly linked to or when trying to leave a comment. It also appears to be an Internet Explorer [IE] specific issue, so if you access using another browser like Firefox, then it's not a problem. I've also found that updating to the latest version of IE reduces the frequency of the jarring halt to proceedings.

As Blogger's Known Issues blog states: we apologize for the inconvenience.

Note that a version of most posts can also be found on the Library's Facebook page.

Round 14 round up

Footy never ceases to amaze
The Dees won a game, the Saints beat the Cats to win 14 in a row (I was hoping for a draw - nearly was, too) and wendy is now, like St Kilda, a clear leader on top of the ladder. Judging by the scores, with bluesgal's 6 winning the round (go Blues, eh?), it was a difficult one to tip.

RECHARGE at the library

Plug in and power up
The Frankston Library Service is part of the expanding power grid for people who drive electric mobility scooters.

To help scooter drivers access the juice they need to get out and about and back home, the RECHARGE scheme provides designated locations to plug in and charge up depleted batteries.

Both the Frankston and Carrum Downs libraries have power
points labeled for RECHARGE (see the blue sticker, right) and are among a number of locations across the municiplaity to provide this service.
.
So now there's another way for library users to recharge their batteries!

How would you like your book?

Let's count the ways
The printed book has become just one platform among many to access a published text. Recently, academic and author Dr Ann Kirschner put four ways of reading Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit to the test, reading via print, audiobook, Kindle ebook reader and iPhone. Along the way she found herself asking the question: Do I love books or do I love reading?

You can find out what Anne discovered Reading Dickens Four Ways in the article format or hear her in conversation with The Book Show's Romana Koval.

The Blogalogue's new poll asks you how you like your books.
