To enable the installation of RFID equipment, we need to take some time out to let the techs have their way with our desks and computers. To this end, the libraries will be closed on the following days:
- Frankston Library and Carrum Downs will be closed Monday, 30 November and Tuesday and Wednesday, 1 and 2 December.
Although the returns chutes will be closed from 4:00 pm Sunday, 29 November, you can still return your loans to the Langwarrin and Seaford Council Shops, where you can also access public computer, printing and photocopying services.
RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) will allow members to issue their own loans, regardless of format, so you'll be able to borrow CDs and DVDs through the new self checkout units as well as books and magazines.

groan! not again
Yes, I know we'll be missed. We'll miss you too.
However, you'll benefit from a completely different way of issuing your loans (all of them, books, CDs and DVDs) when we re-open.
Apologise for the inconvenience
I was extremely disappointed to find that after scheduling in a visit (during my busy day) to return some books, that the Carrum Downs library was closed on Tue 1/12. Not only this, but the return chutes were also locked off! Logic dictates that the chutes should at least have been open during this 3-day closure. Was it not at all possible to roster ONE staff member to monitor the chutes during the day? Why is it that time and again the Frankston Library Service inconveniences its clients with repeated closures for a variety of often dubious reasons (such as staff training - which should be held outside normal library opening hours)? One can only hope that anybody who has books due for return on these closure dates has any overdue fines waived. Not good enough, Frankston Council.
Thanks for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you made a special trip to the Library to find that we were closed and that this has inconvenienced your day.
The library’s closure and the closure of the returns chutes during that time was advertised several weeks in advanced, in the libraries, through our website, blog and Twitter and in the local print media.
The libraries were closed while we installed a completely new system for issuing and returning loans. During this time, old equipment had to be removed and new equipment installed. It then had to be tested and our staff given an opportunity to train on it so that they could help customers when we re-opened. There will be no fines issued for items that would have been due during our closure period.
On the first Tuesday of each month the libraries open later so that a number of activities can be performed that cannot be completed while the library is open. Some of these activities are: maintenance work, introducing new equipment, staff training and meetings. This late start is part of the library’s scheduled opening hours for the year and are advertised on our library brochures.
Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience to your day and hope you will enjoy the new system that we have implemented to improve issuing the collection.
